Hank Steinbrenner whose full name is Henry George “Hank” Steinbrenner III is part-owner and co-chairman of the New York Yankees. He is the older brother of the principal owner and managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner. Steinbrenner was in his 13th year as a general partner and 11th as co-chairperson.
He is reported to have died early Tuesday, April 14th due to a lengthy illness at his Clearwater, Fla., residence, surrounded by family members. He was 63.

Despite his outspoken persona, Steinbrenner is not frequently seen around the team and instead does most of his work from the Yankees offices in Tampa, Florida. He did make a rare appearance in February 2015 to examine Yoan Moncada.

Hank split from his wife, Joan, in 2004, after15 years of marriage. Joan died in December 20018 at the age of 83. She was born on Aug. 25, 1935, in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, and was married to George Steinbrenner on May 12, 1956.
They have four children. His son, George Michael Steinbrenner IV who is the owner of IndyCar team Steinbrenner Racing, which fields a full-time entry in the IndyCar Series in partnership with Harding Racing under the banner of Harding Steinbrenner Racing.

“Hank was a genuine and gentle spirit who treasured the deep relationships he formed with those closest to him,” the Steinbrenner family said in a statement. “He was introduced to the Yankees organization at a very young age, and his love for sports and competition continued to burn brightly throughout his life. Hank could be direct and outspoken, but in the very same conversation show great tenderness and light-heartedness.
“More than anything, he set an example for all of us in how comfortably he lived enjoying his personal passions and pursuits. We are profoundly saddened to have lost him and will carry his memory with us always.”
