Elbernita “Twinkie” Clark is an American gospel musician and evangelist best known as a member of the American gospel singing group The Clark Sisters.

Twinkie was born to gospel musician and choral director Dr. Mattie Moss Clark and Pastor Elbert Clark. Her parents divorced in 1973. Her mother Mattie Moss died in September 22, 1994. Her health had declined due to diabetes and had her right leg amputated and later suffered a stroke which left her confined to a wheelchair.
She was a gospel choir director and the longest serving International Minister of Music for the Church of God in Christ (COGIC). She is credited for creating the three-part harmony (separating vocal parts into soprano, alto and tenor), a technique which is prevalent among gospel choirs today.

Twinkie is a member of The Clark Sisters which is an American gospel vocal group consisting of five sisters; Jacky Clark Chisholm, Denise Clark Bradford, Elbernita “Twinkie” Clark, Dorinda Clark-Cole, and Karen Clark Sheard. They recorded their first album Jesus Has A Lot To Give in 1973.
Twinkie has been the creative force since their mother Mattie Moss Clark turned over control of the group to her in the early 1970s. She has been dubbed as the “Queen of the Hammond B3” organ and has written over 150 songs for her sisters and mother alone.
Twinkie left the Clark Sisters in 1989 to focus on ministry and family. In July 2006 she reunited with The Clark Sisters to record a live album, The Clark Sisters- Live:One Last Time which was released by EMI Gospel.
The Clark Sisters were inducted into the International Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2007 they received a Stellar Award for Most Notable Achievement.

Twinkie Clark Solo Career

Twinkie left The Clark Sisters in 1989 and has since recorded several solo albums intermittently including Comin’Home, Masterpiece. In 2002, she recorded her first live solo album Live in Charlotte. She was one of the first to add jazz, reggae, hip-hop, and blues to gospel music. This is evidenced by listening to her first two solo albums Praise Belongs To God and Ye Shall Receive Power recorded for Sound of Gospel Records while still with The Clark Sisters.

The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel

On April 11, 2020 Lifetime premiered a biopic “The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel” which focuses on the gospel group ‘The Clark Sisters.’ The biopic recounts the story of the female gospel group and their trailblazing mother, Mattie Moss Clark (Aunjanue Ellis). They overcame humble beginnings in Detroit, enduring abuse, loss, rejection, betrayal, and sibling rivalries to achieve international fame as icons of the Gospel Music industry.
