Born in Whiston, Merseyside,  Gerrard began playing for the Whiston Juniors home team, where he was discovered by the Liverpool scouts. He joined the Liverpool Academy at age nine. His childhood soccer heroes were John Barnes and Ian Rush in Liverpool and Paul Gascoigne for England.
