Margarita Pracatan was born on 11 June 1931,Margarita Figueroa in Santiago, Cuba. Her family fled to USA at the outbreak of communism. She was a Cuban novelty singer, who found success in the 1990s when she was booked on numerous occasions to appear on Clive James’s TV show.adopting title ‘Pracatan’ Radio DJ Martin Kelner also played her frequently on his BBC Night Network and BBC Radio 2 programmes. Pracatan’s father was a union leader in Cuba. She began to sing at home when she was three years old. She worked in a store selling men’s underwear while singing at night. She was divorced with one daughter. James showed clips of her heavily Hispanic-inflected performances of pop hits (including Lionel Richie’s Hello and New York, New York) on her BBC series Saturday Night Clive. According to her website, Clive James discovered her Manhattan public-access television cable TV program in 1994 and invited her to the UK to appear on her show. She sweet-talked her into believing she was serious, and she signed up. Although she never mocked her openly, her introductions to her end-of-show performances contained teasing irony. James said of Pracatan, “She never lets the words or melody get in her way. She is us, without the fear of failure.”Pracatan toured in the United Kingdom and Australia, appearing as part of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival, during the mid-1990s. Pracatan appeared in an episode of Real Housewives of New York City in 2019, performing a cover version of Luann de Lesseps’s “Money Can’t Buy You Class”.

The artist’s cause of death is unknown, no official statement has been made, however her daughter Maria Gorshin told Sky News her mother died on Tuesday.

BBC Radio Stoke presenter Den Siegertsz also shared a photo alongside Pracatan as he posted a tribute. He wrote: ‘So today the world lost a beautiful soul RIP Happy lady.. You were always a star x Pracatan!!!
The entertainer became known on Clive James’ show after he discovered her US cable TV programme in 1994 and invited her to the UK to appear on his own show. She was known for her novelty performances on the ITV hit, and while starring on the show Pracatan performed with Boy George, serenaded Liza Minnelli, as well as Stephen Fry. Clive once said of her music: ‘She never lets the words or melody get in her way. She is us, without the fear of failure.’ Radio DJ Martin Kelner also featured her frequently on his BBC Night Network as well as BBC Radio 2 shows. Over her career the star became the grand marshall of Gay Pride parades, headlined London’s G.A.Y. club, toured Australia, and created a riot on the street during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. According to an obituary written by friend, promoter Chip Duckett, Pracatan lived on the Upper West Side in New York City after relocating from Cuba.
